Synopsis

A girl, a secret, a summer that changes everything.

Seckbridge, Suffolk, the summer of 1960. Fourteen-year-old Minna Starling is, by her own reckoning, such a good girl: top of the class, dutiful daughter, devoted granddaughter, faithful best friend to the vicar’s daughter Marigold. Then her father takes her on a strange, abrupt weekend to Paris with his best friend ‘Uncle’ Clive, and the careful structure of her life begins to slip.

A glamorous, dangerous brother and sister appear on a Dutch barge called the Chancy Maid and offer her a life off the rails. Marigold has a secret of her own. And in a London courtroom, two men are about to be arrested. Glaister at her most acute and tender.
