What we want and how to oil the cogs

 

The publishing context at Salt

In order to allow you to judge whether you wish to submit to Salt, please read the following summary carefully:

  1. 6 January 2009. We are only accepting poetry submissions for unsolicited debut collections through our new annual award: The Crashaw Prize. Please visit the Web site for more details.
  2. We are not currently accepting poetry proposals.
  3. We are not currently accepting short story submissions.
  4. We only publish in the following areas: poetry, short stories, writing guides, literary biography and literary criticism (including companions, studies and histories).
  5. We require World rights for your book in all languages, and world rights in English for translated works.
  6. We pay 7.5% royalties on short stories and poetry, based on net receipts. This amount may be split across multiple contributors.
  7. We actively contract and support authors who tour, read and perform their work, play an active part of the contemporary literary scene, and seek a readership.
  8. We sell books to authors at 35% discount, and these copies may be sold direct to consumers at readings and events.
  9. We do not sell books to authors on a sale or return basis.
  10. We do produce postcards, catalogues and other promotional material at our own expense.
  11. We give 6 free copies to authors.
  12. We do not include termination clauses in our contracts.
  13. We do not waive author warranties and indemnities on any contract.
  14. We do not pay advances.
  15. We retain full control over all aspects of design, including the text and the cover, including cover illustrations.
  16. We do not take payment from authors to produce books.
  17. We do not normally publish multiple books in the same year of publication and require an eighteen month to two-year gap between publications.
  18. We do not organise author tours or act as agents.
  19. We do not normally organise reading tours, though we may organise events.
  20. Due to the volume of books we publish you should not expect Salt to attend launches or readings.
  21. We do require audio and video podcasts of authors. You should be prepared to assist in a wide range of marketing practices, including social networking sites and blogs.
  22. We do not pay for permissions fees.
  23. We do not pay for the author’s use of illustations or photography.
  24. We do not publish authors who have no current track record of publication in broadsheets, magazines and journals.
  25. Due to the volume of submissions Salt now receives, we will only reply to successful proposals.
  26. When Salt does accept poetry proposals (see point 2 above) they must be emailed to:

    We no longer accept paper submissions for any poetry.
  27. Replies from Salt will take place within one month, if you haven't heard from us in this time, your submission has proved unsuccessful.
  28. We are happy to receive submissions which have been sent synchronously to other publishers (i.e. multiple submissions are acceptable).
  29. No materials will be returned to the author or editor, please do not send precious or irreplaceable materials.
  30. We cannot enter into correspondence with an unsuccesful author or editor.
  31. It is important that you understand the basic terms of publishing with Salt, and have read and agreed to the terms outlined here.

Writing your proposal

With the exception of poetry, we do not accept submissions by email. Please send us six poems, three short stories, or a synoposis and sample of a critical work, which provide the best illustration of your writing.

 

Please include a written proposal for the book following the guidelines below.

 

Do not discuss the quality or value of your writing in the proposal as we will be able to determine this from the stories, poems or excerpts themselves.

 

  1. What is your book called?
    Having a great title is key to attracting our attention.
  2. What is your book about?
    In no more than 100 words describe the essential character of your book, and sell it to us.
  3. Who will buy it?
    Describe as precisely as you can the intended readership, or readerships, for your book.
  4. Why should we publish you?
    This is your opportunity to sell yourself to Salt.
  5. Your publishing history.
    Provide a brief list of when and where you have been published.
  6. Some simple endorsements.
    If possible, provide a brief list of single sentence endorsements from writers who support you and your work.
  7. Contact details.
    Include full contact details of how we can reach you. We are happy to contact you by email.
