Long biographical note
Liz Gallagher was born and brought up in Donegal, Ireland. She studied in Dublin and worked there for 10 years. She has a Bachelor of Education degree where she specialised in Irish language. She also has a Computer Science degree. She is at present doing research into online debating for her doctoral thesis. She moved to Gran Canary Island about 14 years ago – it was a stopover while en route to travelling the world – now it is a home from home and she is still trying to travel the world, at intervals.
Liz teaches English language in the Aula de Idiomas (Foreign Language Learning School), which is affiliated to the University of Las Palmas in Gran Canary Island (ULPGC). She also works for the British Council as the Cambridge Exams Team Leader for the Oral Examiners on the island.
Her hobbies include planning a renovation of an old Canarian farm, hanging out with her dogs, being amused by her cat, reading, going to films and theatre and photography.
Liz began writing about five years ago. She has had poetry, fiction and non-fiction work published widely in Ireland, the UK and the USA. Awards and prizes include selection for the 50 Best New Poets 2007 Anthology from Meridian Press in Virginia University where she was one of three cash prize winners. A poem of hers was chosen for inclusion in the Oxfam Ireland Poetry Calendar 2009. She was selected by Poetry Ireland to take part in its Introductions Readings in May 09 in recognition of her status as an emerging poet. She has just won first prize in The 2009 Listowel Writers’ Festival Single Poem competition. The Wrong Miracle is her first collection. She blogs at Musings (
